Do Screen Protectors Work? Secrets Revealed!!

Which material is used to create smartphone displays? Glass right? Then, to protect it, why do we cover it with another glass? The reason is pretty simple. Replacing a display can be quite expensive but not the protective glass, which we call screen protector aka screen guard. So, the screen protector should keep the phone’s display safe from damage. Well, not in every situation. It can protect your display from minor impacts but not from heavy torture. Yes, the material quality of a screen protector definitely matters too. In this article, we have discussed everything in detail so that you have an idea of when do screen protectors work? & when not.

Are screen Protectors really necessary?

Well, it depends on many factors. However, few years back, it was an essential accessory to have. When smartphone displays were made of plastics, they could easily be scratched and damaged over time. So to protect the visibility, people had to use screen guards on the displays but it is not a necessary accessory unless you want to protect your smartphone from minor scratches.

As you know, nowadays smartphones have the protection of Corning Gorilla Glass which is not a normal glass rather a much harder formation which is why the displays don’t get scratched like glass easily and also it’s less fragile than glass. But it is not unbreakable or unscratchable. On the hardness scale of level 6, the Gorilla Glass can be scratched. Material like sand and diamond can easily scratch Gorilla Glass. So using a screen protector can definitely protect it from sand and dust.

In terms of fall protection, it depends on angle, force, and from how far the phone fell into the ground.

Different Type of Screen Guards

There are mainly two types of screen guards Plastic and Tempered Glass but we can divide the plastic screen guards into two segments TPU and PET.

TPU

TPU stands for Thermoplastic Polyurethane which is chemically-enhanced plastic with “self-healing” abilities. Also, it is scratch resistant as well as elasticity, oil and grease resistant. These screen guards are quite flexible and work very well with curved display edges. Most importantly, they don’t affect the viewing experience or touch response much. Basically, they do nothing but to protect your display from scratches but they can be scratched more easily than tempered glass. Also, it can’t provide any kind of fall protection to your smartphone.

PET

Also called Polyethylene Terephthalate is a type of plastic usually found on things like water bottles and food containers. In terms of screen guards, these are super cheap, light, thin and provide less visibility of the screen. And you know what? that means impact-protection for your display.

Oh! Yes, PET screen protectors are easier to install but sometimes it runs into issues with air bubbles that take a while to fix.

Tempered glass

And we all know about the Tempered Glass which is basically a type of glass that is processed by chemicals and heat to increase its hardness level a bit. Tempered glass is not nearly similar to your phone’s Gorilla glass but it is a bit harder than normal glass. Definitely Tempered glass screen protectors are the best option if you’re really cautious about the display’s survivability from fall damage.

What we think about Screen Guards…

Definitely, Corning Gorilla Glass is the protection you get with your smartphone but it is not a bad idea to have an extra layer of protection to get the confirmation of peace in mind and If you’re only worried about scratches, a TPU or PET film option will work but a tempered glass screen guard is a much better option for complete protection and long-lasting if you do not drop your phone rapidly or on concrete.

Issue With under display fingerprint scanner

For modern smartphones, you have to keep in mind that because of the thickness of tempered glass, maybe your under-display fingerprint scanners create issues. It is reported that many scanners don’t work at all with tempered glass guards and also if your phone has a curved display then It’s difficult to find good options for you. Definitely, like anything else, proper research is key here. So, do research and grab the best screen guard for you.
